Moxibustion Therapy

Moxibustion Therapy

Moxibustion is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and it has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years. Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy, where moxa, a soft woolly substance prepared from mugwort leaves (Artemisia vulgaris) is used. The moxa is placed either directly on the needle or held just above the skin, over specific acupuncture points or meridians. The herb is lit and as it smolders slowly, a therapeutic heat permeates the skin and affects the flow of energy and blood in the area being treated.

Moxibustion is successfully used in gynaecological and obstetrical conditions, including breech presentation in late-term pregnancy. It is also applied in musculoskeletal pain due to injury or in arthritis, especially in "cold" patterns where the pain naturally feels better with the application of heat. Finally, it is used in digestive issues and helps to strengthen the immune system to prevent colds and flus.
